We believe that teaching children to sing well, underpins access to a good music education. Singing plays an important role in contributing to our daily worship and in promoting our school’s Christian values; thus all children attend a hymn practice each week. During hymn practices, children learn to sing in unison and in parts, and begin to learn musical vocabulary and about some of the structures of music. Class assemblies, termly concerts and Masses throughout the year also give the children in all year groups an opportunity to share their talents.
In KS2 we develop our listening skills and appreciation of music at the beginning of each lesson. We learn about the history of music and develop our personal views about music. Currently all children in KS2 are learning to read staff notation through learning to play the descant recorder. We are extremely grateful to the London Ukulele Project which recently donated several ukuleles to us. We are looking forward to learning to play these.
In addition to singing at school fairs and at events within the local community, St Paul’s Choir takes part in the annual Elmbridge Music Festival where children have an opportunity to perform with many other schools to a large audience.
